Life Coach vs. Therapist: Which Do You Need?

A gentle guide to choosing the support that fits this season of your life.

Maybe you've been feeling the pull for a while.

You know something needs to shift. You're craving support, someone to talk to, someone to help you make sense of where you are and where you're going.

And then the question comes up: do I need a life coach or a therapist?

It's one of the questions I hear most as a life coach in Cleveland, and it's a beautiful one to ask. Because choosing the right kind of support is an act of self-respect.

So let's talk about the difference, honestly and without judgment, so you can choose what you truly need right now.

What Does a Therapist Do?

A therapist is a licensed mental health professional. Therapists are trained to assess, diagnose and treat mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, trauma and grief.

Therapy often explores the past: where your patterns began, what you've lived through, and how those experiences still shape the way you feel and respond today.

Therapy can be life-changing. It's a space to heal what hurts, with someone clinically trained to guide you safely through it.

What Does a Life Coach Do?

A life coach focuses on where you are now and where you want to go.

Coaching is about clarity, growth and aligned action. Together, we explore what you desire, what's getting in the way, and what steps will help you create a life and business that feel true to who you are.

In my 1:1 coaching, that includes:

  • Getting clear on your vision and what you truly want.

  • Noticing the beliefs and patterns that keep you playing small.

  • Nervous system support and somatic practices to help you feel grounded as you grow.

  • Strategy and accountability for your goals, in life and in business.

  • A trusted sounding board for the decisions that matter most.

Coaching is forward-moving. It assumes you're whole and capable, and it helps you remember that.

Life Coach vs. Therapist: The Key Differences

Here's a simple way to think about it:

  • Focus: Therapy often looks at healing the past. Coaching looks at creating the future.

  • Training: Therapists are licensed clinicians. Life coaches are not, and should never diagnose or treat mental health conditions.

  • What you bring: Therapy is a place for pain that feels heavy, overwhelming or hard to function through. Coaching is a place for growth, decisions, goals and expansion.

  • How it feels: Therapy asks, "Why do I feel this way?" Coaching asks, "What do I want, and what's my next aligned step?"

Neither is better. They're different kinds of support for different moments.

When a Therapist Is the Right Choice

Please reach out to a licensed therapist if you're:

  • Struggling to get through daily life, work or relationships.

  • Experiencing ongoing depression, anxiety, panic or grief.

  • Working through trauma or painful experiences from your past.

  • Noticing patterns with food, substances or self-harm.

  • Feeling hopeless or unsafe.

If you're in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline any time, or call 911.

Choosing therapy isn't a step back. It's one of the bravest, most loving things you can do for yourself.

When a Life Coach Is the Right Choice

A life coach may be a beautiful fit if:

  • You're functioning well, but you know you're ready for more.

  • You're in a season of change and want clarity on your next chapter.

  • You have big dreams for your life or business and want support bringing them to life.

  • You keep second-guessing yourself, overgiving or holding back, and you're ready to trust yourself again.

  • You want someone to hold the vision with you, and to lovingly hold you accountable to it.

Can You Work With Both?

Yes, and many women do.

Therapy and coaching can complement each other beautifully. Therapy can help you heal and process. Coaching can help you take that healing into how you live, lead and build what's next.

If you're already working with a therapist, I always encourage you to keep that support in place. And if something comes up in our coaching that's better suited to therapy, I'll tell you so, with care.

How I Work as a Life Coach in Cleveland

I'm not a therapist. I'm a life and business coach who supports ambitious, heart-centered women across Cleveland, Northeast Ohio and beyond.

My work blends the inner and the outer: intuition and strategy, nervous system awareness and aligned action, the woman you're becoming and the life and business you're building.

We meet over Zoom, so you can work with me from anywhere. And if you're curious how this looks in business, I share more in What Does a Business Coach in Cleveland Actually Do?
